Going Dutch (at the Beach)

We've had unusually warm and sunny weather this trip.  Brussels is positively summer-like.  And so with that, we headed out to the beach last weekend.  Took the train up to Knokke-Heist, a small, resort-y stretch of beach, close to the Netherlands.

It was also like stepping back into time.  Very 70's, very blonde, very Charlie's Angels or Starsky and Hutch.  Loads of shorty-shorts, retro swimwear, and polyester or nylon.  Not unlike this.  I tried so hard to grab a couple of photos of these adorable little speedo-ed kids but it was hard.  Also, bordered on the very creepy.

We prepared for cold, dreary seaside weather.  It wasn't.

And the sea was warm.  We all went in, even rode some waves.  Dutch style.

Visit Ruschmeyer's - but don't tell anyone

A camp. A commune. A seaside retreat. Perfectly nostalgic and comfortable. And pleasing to the eye. On the end of Long Island. Montauk. But please keep it a secret.  (shhhhh....it's ruschmeyer's)

The Summer Holiday

I've been slow to post lately.  Apologies.  We've slipped into Summer Mom Camp, which means I have two kids I  have to entertain daily from basically 8am until 9pm.  For free. They don't tip, either.

But - it's not all bad or boring.  I have a visor, clipboard, and a whistle.  And I use them well.  Yet, this weekend we're all heading to Rhode Island for the long holiday weekend....which seems to make Summer Camp a little more palatable.

The 4th of July is by far my favorite holiday.  It's smack in the middle of summer (at least in Kansas it was - here in New England, maybe not so much), the ocean is warm enough to swim in, and it seems to me that time moves a little more slowly with days of surfing, playing pickle, and staying up late with a bonfire.

It's all about  Del's lemonade, mosquito bites, and Coppertone.  And fireworks on the beach.  Have a safe, happy holiday weekend.

Summuh Vaca.

Gotta go check on those rocks and pebbles we deliberately placed by the shore in Rhode Island....may take days, even weeks.

In fact, it might even require laying perfectly still in the sand or swimming continuously in the surf to remember how and where those stones were placed. A Del's could fortify our memory. Or some clam cakes and chowder.

Should be back aftuh Labuh Day (with or without the Rhode Island accent).

Cheaters, Charlatons, and Tricksters

We totally cheated. We completely beat the system. When no one was looking, we pulled a fast one.

It was chicanery at its finest hour.

We went about our days and weeks...September becoming October....Summer into Fall and we tricked and deceived Mother Nature.

Posing as a day in the middle of summer, Saturday, October 6th was spent at the beach. In the water. Body surfing.

It was a bonanza of a day!
